One Conversation Can Save a Life
Individual Image

Jack Swan, Executive Director of Fentanyl Fathers, has worked with the Alliance since 2023. He was drawn to the Alliance because: "It is a trusted coalition and a recognized leader in substance use prevention across Oakland County. Their mission and collaborative approach align perfectly with our own commitment to drug prevention and working together to save lives.”
Together, the organizations have created a partnership that provides fentanyl awareness education and overdose prevention programming in schools across Southeast Michigan. This program is community-driven and uses evidence-based practices, combining proven methods with personal experiences. Jack says: "We believe one conversation can save a life, so we strive to have as many as possible, as often as possible.”
His dedication to this work stems from the loss of his brother, Drew Swan, to a drug overdose in 2013. "Sharing his story and spreading awareness about the dangers of fentanyl, especially with youth, helps me stay connected to him," Jack explains.
The rising number of accidental and fatal drug poisonings among youth creates a devastating impact that extends far beyond the individual, highlighting the urgent need for this work. "Grief like this doesn't just affect one person - it ripples through entire families and communities," Jack notes.
His vision for the future drives both organizations forward. "Until we see fentanyl-related overdose deaths among adolescents reduced to zero, there is still work to be done. Beyond prevention, I also hope our mission helps families heal, grieve, connect, and advocate - reminding them that they are not alone, and together, we can create real change.”
For Jack Swan and the Alliance, every conversation is a chance to save a life and give families the help they need.
