Auburn Hills, MI – April 20, 2018
The Alliance of Coalitions for Healthy Communities (the Alliance) joined forces with a local non-profit, Love for a Child, to increase efforts to address at-risk youth in foster care.
According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services website, children in foster care may be at greater risk for mental health problems, as most have experienced some form of abuse or neglect or suffer from being separated from their families. These children need access to the latest mental health information and resources, and so do their parents, guardians, foster parents, and foster care and health care professionals. In Michigan, there are nearly 13,000 children in foster care.
“By incorporating Love for a Child into our suite of prevention programming we will be able to further increase efforts to positively impact the kids we serve as we continually adapt to meet their needs to make a positive difference in their lives,” said Julie Brenner, CEO of the Alliance.
This new partnership with Love for A Child will extend and compliment current Alliance prevention programs, Keep Them Safe, Keep Them Healthy! and Life Is Your Playbook, as well as generate new initiatives that will directly impact Oakland County at-risk, foster care children and youth by providing State approved trained mentors, programs, camps and events where we teach on the simple, but clear expression that, “kids should be kids.”
“These opportunities will give foster care children, youth and their families many platforms to grow through life with leadership skills, direct mentoring and support by a committed team whose goal is to give positive memories and hope in a safe environment to an often overlooked demographic of families,” explained Joseph Savalle, Founder of Love For A Child.
